Cookies and localStorage are different
Cookies are small values stored by your browser that may be sent with requests to a website. localStorage is a browser storage mechanism that a page’s scripts can read on the same origin. localStorage values are not automatically included in web requests, but similar consent and privacy considerations can apply.
What the atlas code uses
The site’s own code does not set analytics, advertising or profiling cookies. It does not load third-party trackers, external fonts or embedded media. The local message tool does not store its draft in cookies or localStorage.
If you select a preference below, the site saves a local record containing your choice and a timestamp. This record is used to remember the choice on this browser. It is not an advertising identifier, contains no name or email address and is not transmitted by the site’s JavaScript.

Essential and optional functions
The current atlas runs no optional tracking. Choosing Accept below records that preference but does not activate analytics, advertising or additional scripts. Choosing Essential Only leaves the reading experience and local message tool available. A preference record is saved only when you select one of the controls.
If optional technologies are introduced later, this notice must be updated and any consent required by law obtained before they operate. A saved choice is not permission for unrelated, undisclosed purposes.
